Expectations that a "new world order" based on peace and democracy will be established are about to be destroyed on the battlefields of the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle East. We are still a long way from self-paced, multicultural democratic societies. The tangle of problems that Westerners call the "Eastern Problem" has revived. Yerasimos searches for the reasons for this frightening development in his geopolitical articles, which he wrote starting from the mid-80s, and examines the processes of nationalization and drawing nation-state borders that came to the fore with the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman and Russian Empires, which became history with the First World War.
