  • "It was in Beirut, Lebanon, that I boarded the Mesopotamia Express, on which I traveled through history from past to future. Syrian Kurds introduced me to Celal Talabani, the Iraqi Kurdish leader, who would later become the first elected president of Iraq's history, in Beirut. Years later, I too I introduced the Iraqi Kurdish leader to the President of Turkey. Turkey has begun to learn that it cannot open up to the Middle East and cross its borders without the Kurds and without confronting history.
