Meselenin Özü-Modern Klasikler 132
The Essence of the Matter, set in Sierra Leone, a British colony during World War II, has lost none of its popularity since its publication in 1948. Greene based the novel on his experiences in that country as a member of the British Secret Service during the war. The novel, whose atmosphere is composed of war, espionage, love, adultery and betrayal, attracts attention with its themes of mercy, suffering, religion and responsibility. And with two fundamental moral dilemmas: “Is it possible to make others happy?” and “Can suicide be the solution?” George Orwell called the novel “one of Greene's best works,” while Anthony Burgess applauded the author's ability to “encapsulate the spirit of an exotic setting in a single book.” The Heart of the Matter is ranked fortieth in Modern Library's list of the 100 best novels written in the English language of the 20th century, and was also included in Time magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels written after 1923.
