Letters - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description
Apollonios of Tyana (1st century AD): He is a Neo-Pythagorean philosopher. Tyana was a Greek city where the Kemerhisar town of Niğde is located today. Sources state that Apollonios' family dates back to the founders of the city. The most important source providing information about the philosopher's life is Philostratus' work, which consists of eight books. It elevates Apollonios to the status of a legendary person by mentioning the various miracles he performed, and ends with the information that the Roman Emperor Caracalla had a mausoleum built for him in Tyana. Some of the letters attributed to Apollonios are found in this work, some are found in the anthology created by John Stobaeus, who lived in the 5th century, and a larger part is found in medieval manuscripts. The letters reveal the life of Apollonios of Tyana, his travels, his relationships with his contemporaries and emperors, and the impact he had on people during and after his lifetime.
