Medea-Hasan Ali Yücel Classics
Euripides (c.484-406 BC) has a special place as the artist with the largest number of works that have survived to the present day among the three great tragic poets produced by Athens. This is attributed to the fact that he was a more admired poet among the public, even though he did not win the first prize at the festivals as much as Aeschylus and Sophocles. The heroes of Euripides' plays have human weaknesses and flaws, and the tragedies they experience arise from these flaws and their passions that they cannot give up. What makes this play, which was first staged in 431 BC and won third place at the Dionysus festivals, one of the most well-known and most performed plays of Euripides, is that the protagonist Medea stands out magnificently from the other tragic heroines of tragedy with her surprising revenge and nihilistic character.
