Matryoshka Park
“I opened the bars of the back balcony and went out. I walked a short distance and came to the beautiful park at the intersection. It was dark, but there were still people using the park. People eating ice cream, eating sunflower seeds, young people, old people who had their dinners early, even though it was cold. A pimply boy was reading a book, two Russian girls in school uniforms were giggling between them…
But in four or five hours, this family-scented park will belong to other people. People like me among them. The clean benches will be soiled with muddy boots, obscene things will be written on the shutters of the ice cream parlor. These are different kinds of people… the younger ones among them will slide down the slide, make childish noises and pierce the sky on the swings. The older ones will search for the scent of the young Russian girl snuggled up on the benches, sniff the back of the bench, and kiss it. Someone will search for lipsticked cigarette butts on the ground, in the trash. He will find…
They will joke too. They will miss too. They will live too.”
