The Ottoman Empire became the main conflict area of 19th century diplomacy under the title of "Eastern Question". Ottoman society, which gradually lost its Eastern identity but could not achieve "reform" or "modernization", stimulated the imagination of an army of travelers who explored every corner of it in this century. Moreover, it provided material for the observation and analysis of many thinkers and scientists. So much so that there were even those among them, such as Auguste Comte, who presented reform plans to Ottoman statesmen. However, the most penetrating analyzes on this subject were made by Marx and Engels, who not only interpreted Ottoman society within the framework of general and objective data, but also followed it as journalists for years. These analyzes also illuminated the elements that hindered the Ottoman transformation and, in this context, the processes of industrialization and nationalization within the law of uneven and interconnected development of capitalism. In this first chapter, which gives its name to the book, the comments of Marx and Engels, who made striking observations about Turkish migrations, Ottoman-Byzantine symbiosis and reform initiatives, followed the Crimean War day by day and supported Mithat Pasha's revolutionary attempt that ended in disappointment, are summarized and conclusions are drawn. . In the following chapters, the topics of "Reform" and nationalization" are detailed. "Internal and Foreign Migrations in Ottoman Society", "Ottoman State, Enlightenment and Nation-State", "From Tanzimat to Young Turks: The National Question" and "Holy War, "Revolution and the Cult of Atatürk" are some of these sections.
