Martin Eden
Martin Eden, one of the most unforgettable characters created by Jack London, is a poor and uneducated young man from the working class. His reading and writing adventure began when he fell in love with Ruth, the extremely beautiful and knowledgeable daughter of a wealthy upper-class family. This young man, whose literary journey we witness throughout the novel, does not compromise his personality while changing. What sets Martin Eden apart from countless other similar heroes is his passion, faith and courage. So will the American dream be a defeat or an experience for Martin?
While Jack London compared the value judgments of different classes, he also criticized the seemingly unshakable perfection of the bourgeoisie. The reason why the novel, which also discusses the ideological and sociological issues of its period, has been accepted and become a classic in world literature since 1909, is because it contains semi-autobiographical elements from the life of its author.
