Martin Eden
In his semi-autobiographical novel Martin Eden, Jack London tells the story of a young ship worker who puts his life on the line to become a writer.
He works as a sailor in San Francisco. Martin Eden's writing adventure begins with his love for Ruth Morse. Ruth comes from a wealthy background and her family does not approve of her marrying a poor worker. For Martin, the only way to build a life with the woman he loves is to become a writer and have himself accepted by literary circles. From the moment he decided to become a writer, he wrote with inexhaustible determination and sent his writings to publishers. Even though he receives only rejection letters in response, he continues to work without losing faith. In the end, he succeeds in gaining the respect of the publishers and the bourgeois circles he is eager to enter. However, this will not be enough to make him happy as he thinks.
"Martin was an adventurer and a man of action, and there are not many writers who can achieve this."
