Marxism, Orientalism, Cosmopolitanism is one of Gilbert Achcar's last works that examines the issues that are closely related to our age and especially the geography of the Middle East from a Marxist perspective. Achcar examines the phenomenon of religion coming back to the world agenda within the context of Christian Liberation Theology and Islamic fundamentalism, within a comparative sociology of religion. In this evaluation, which blends historical and current readings, the phenomenon of religion is discussed without compromising an essentialist approach. In the context of Edward Said's Orientalism, the author responds to Said's criticisms of Marx with counter-criticisms and reveals Marx's criticism of radical essentialism as the basis of Marxism. By reading the discussions of Orientalism through both individuals (Francois Burgat, Oliver Carré, Oliver Roy) and historical events, Achcar takes into account not only the transformation in this field, but also the transformation of the intellectual, his boundaries, and his positioning in power relations. In his analysis of cosmopolitanism, the author approaches the subject by focusing on the ruptures and tensions in Marx's intellectual development and offers critical perspectives on these problems that continue today.
