Marx After Marxism encourages the reader to interpret and understand Marx with new eyes by freeing Karl Marx from the mortgage of political Marxist approaches that dominate the discussions of both Marxists and non-Marxists. This book, on the one hand, focuses on Marx's relationship with Hegel, and on the other hand, offers a broad and understandable analysis of Marx's philosophy.

Political Marxism has always claimed, and still does, a privileged relationship to Marx's theories. This Marxism presented a philosophy of Marx that was generally accepted by everyone without careful examination. This book argues that political Marxism transformed, distorted, and rendered Marx's fundamental philosophical views incomprehensible, and in order to intervene in this process, it focuses on reconsidering Marx's philosophical ideas within a broader Hegelian framework. Perhaps for the first time after the end of political Marxism, it is possible to write an introduction to the view that depicts Marx not as a new beginning in German philosophy, but as a continuation of that tradition. Marx After Marxism is the product of such an effort. After a period of drought in serious Marx studies, the publication of Rockmore's book, which contains detailed information about both philosophical and historical periods, is a great event. By making a careful analysis of Marx's own texts, Rockmore re-situates him in the tradition of German idealism and, after freeing him from the burden of later Marxisms, produces a powerful and understandable synthesis.

-William L. Bride, Purdue University-

The collapse of communism was followed by a decline in interest in Marx. Rockmore's Marx After Marxism is the beginning of a new appreciation of Marx that will help reverse this trend... Rockmore also explains Marx's approach to political economy very well, especially the main ideas of Capital.

-Robert Nola, University of Auckland-
