Four Lessons on Marxism
This book by Paul Sweezy, one of the leading Marxist economists of the 20th century, published in the Socialist Pocket Books series, is a must-read work to fully understand the current crisis of capital by shedding light on the foundations of Marxism and especially the modus operandi of imperialism. In the first lecture, Sweezy explains his dialectical way of thinking and Marxist understanding of materialism, after establishing a communication bridge with the audience by telling how he turned to Marxism when he was a young economist trained in bourgeois economics. In the second lesson, the contradictions of capitalism are discussed using the basic categories of commodity, capital circuits, surplus value, primitive accumulation and overaccumulation of capital. In the first of the explanatory appendices of this chapter, the "Law of the Declining Tendency of the Rate of Profit" is evaluated, and in the second, the changes observed in the forms and methods of capitalism during its transition from its competitive phase to its monopolistic phase are evaluated with a theoretical approach. The relations and contradictions between the periphery and the center, as well as the crisis of the global capitalist system, are discussed in the third lecture. In the last lecture, the problems and future of socialism are discussed
