A Ruined God is about the life of Teddy, the brother of Ursula, the heroine of Life from the Beginning. Teddy grows up and joins the British Air Force as a pilot during World War II. After the war, he gives up his dreams of becoming a poet, following his father's advice to "neither sink nor rise, stay somewhere in the middle." He marries his first love and lives a long and ordinary life with his wife, who is a teacher, and their daughter.

Although Teddy's war experience is at the axis of the novel, which witnesses almost a century from the 1920s to the 2000s with jumps back and forth between the characters across four generations, Atkinson actually examines England trying to recover after the War through the microcosm created by the Todd family.

In his novel, which is woven with colorful characters and surprises, the author does not refrain from subtly questioning fiction itself.
