Socio-Economic Life in 17th Century Istanbul in the Light of Court Records - Volume 2 (Hardcover)
What were the institutional foundations of socio-economic life in the Eastern Mediterranean in the 17th century, when the modern global economic system began to develop? Were the traditional institutions of the regional economy changing? A data compilation project that began in 2003 and was driven by these questions resulted in this study, which includes original resources to help develop sound answers. This ten-volume work was created by translating thousands of rulings from 15 sharia court books of that period in Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire and the commercial center of the Eastern Mediterranean, into today's text, preparing Turkish and English summaries, and classifying them under seven main headings.
