Lütfi Pasha (1488-1563) served the Ottoman Sultans Yavuz and Kanuni and married Kanuni's sister. He was not only a statesman but also an army commander who participated in wars on land and sea. One of the first things he did during his time as Grand Vizier was to appoint Koca Sinan as an architect. The reason why he went down in history as a successful ruler is that he was someone who knew and applied both worldly and religious sciences.
The Pasha was not a very intelligent or cunning person, but he was a cold-blooded vizier who examined and investigated events well and found immediate and preventive solutions. He never got involved in palace intrigues. He always remained above and outside of events. p;
After retiring to his farm in 1541, Pasha started to produce his works. Asafnâme’ is also one of the works produced in this period. This forward-looking statesman does not give theoretical advice in his work, but suggests things that are possible to apply and can be done. As a statesman who is familiar with all the problems of society, he evaluates events completely and completely. He establishes connections between causes and effects. He indicates and presents to us the place and importance of all the links of the social chain and the dangers that will arise from their absence. While doing these, he takes examples from the past and draws lessons from them.
According to what Ali Emir narrated, the following words about the Pasha are mentioned in the Sehi Bey Tezkire:
“He was raised under the patronage of his excellency Sultan Selim. He was one of those who were very acceptable in his honorable presence. He applied the sharia, was just, virtuous and had good characteristics, had the temperament of an angel, had a beautiful face like the prophet Joseph, was clothed with modesty and manners, and had intelligence and foresight. He had attained high ranks by acquiring knowledge with. This person, who was fond of his worships, was a skilled vizier who loved those with knowledge and skill... When Lütfi Pasha became the grand vizier, he eliminated all innovations. The people of the country found peace and prayed for him. His morality worthy of praise in every way and his qualities appreciated by everyone were unique, extremely intelligent, brave, statesman, benign in nature and sound in mind. Due to his alert structure and the artistry of his mind, his bright and showy poems and ornate poems... ”
