Luxury and Violence
What does it mean to read the medieval Islamic thinker and historian Ibn Khaldun today? Can we use his findings on the state, the rise and fall of power, revolutions and the strength of the sense of unity of societies as a key to understanding the conflicts and crises taking place in the Islamic geography and beyond? Is it an inevitable fate for governments and societies to collapse by being dragged into a spiral of violence? Hamit Bozarslan, who is known for his research on Middle East history and violence, in this work titled Luxury and Violence, Domination and Resistance in Ibn Khaldun, which was deemed worthy of the "Med 21 Program Ibn Khaldun Award", examines the concepts of power and civilization through the eyes of Ibn Khaldun, one of the most important thinkers of Islamic geography. looking. Bozarslan, who interprets Ibn Khaldun's political philosophy through the dialectics of domination and resistance by comparing it with European thinkers such as Machiavelli, Pareto and Toynbee, also points out the deadlocks and hopes contained in his theory of civilization. The model proposed by Ibn Khaldun puts contradiction at the center of the analysis: The city cannot be established without violence, but it cannot continue its existence with it. The city, which is captured and tamed by a mostly harsh and wild founding force, gives rise to some other desires for power; Although these desires are not always fatal for the city, they keep it in constant struggle. As power becomes systematic, the city begins to produce more and more systematic violence. Even if there is no collapse, he devotes a large part of his time to preventing a violence of which he is the producer and victim of the violence.
