Alfred de Musset (1810-1857): One of the most important names of 19th century French literature. He became famous with his poetry book titled Contes d'Espagne et d'Italie, published in 1829. He became a regular in the circle of Romantic writers such as Victor Hugo and Charles Nodier. He worked as a librarian in the library of the French Ministry of Internal Affairs during the July Monarchy, and was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1845. He was elected a member of the Académie française in 1852. Besides poetry, Alfred de Musset wrote many works in the genre of novels, stories and plays. When his first play, La Nuit vénitienne (1830), failed on stage, he did not allow his plays to be staged until 1847. Lorenzaccio, which was first staged in 1896, is extremely rich with its political and psychological dimensions and complex dramaturgy, and is also extremely modern in its treatment of the life of its romantic protagonist, Lorenzo, stuck between virtue and debauchery, full of contradictions. It is evidence that Alfred de Musset's wish "to become either Shakespeare or Schiller one day" has come true. Lorenzaccio is the Hamlet of French literature. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
