Locus Solus
Raymond Roussel (1877-1933) is considered among the great pioneers of contemporary French literature. Surrealists glorify their poems and prose, which are the product of an inner experience at the borders of writing and reality. Breton calls him "the greatest magician of all ages, along with Lautreamont"; Dali says that if he had to save just one book from a fire, this book would be his only novel, "Locus Solus", and Leiris sees him as an ideal traveler. But Roussel's admirers are not limited to the surrealists. Michel Foucault, one of the great thinkers of our century, writes a whole book about him. Two important pioneers of the "New Novel", Alain Robbe-Grillet and Michel Butor, consider him a great master of writing and fiction, because, as "Locus Solus" testifies, Raymond Roussel pushes the limits of the imagination primarily in the details.
