Leviathan
Paul Guéret is a stranger who has just moved to town. He finds a job as a private tutor in the villa of the Grosgorges, a bourgeois family with secrets of their own. He is trapped in this job, which he finds boring, and in his marriage to his wife, whom he hates. He soon becomes morbidly attached to Angele, a beautiful laundress. He begins to be poisoned by the desires inside him that have never seen the light of day, and therefore are rotten. But Guéret is neither the only sinner nor the only victim in this small town.
Julien Green, the son of American parents, was born in France. He wrote his books in French. The war between the origin and language, desires and beliefs, innocence and darkness of the author, who was the first foreigner accepted to the Académie Française, would continue throughout his life. To describe his faithful side, Hermann Hesse compared him to the "Christian Kafka", while André Gide praised his "dark genius". Maeterlinck, on the other hand, after reading Leviathan, would remember him as "an underground Balzac who moves the miner's lamp among much darker shadows than we are used to."
Julien Green, who had one of the most productive and longest-lasting writing careers of the 20th century, took his place among the unforgettable as one of the most important and unique writers of his time.
