Laz and Mingrelian are also known as Zan Languages (Zanuri Nena) and Kolkhian (Kolkhuri Nena). Linguists classify Laz and Mingrelian within the South Caucasus Language Family, along with Georgian and Svan languages. Megrelians live collectively in the Samargalo / Samegrelo regions of Georgia, where they are natives, and the Gali / Samurzakano regions of Abkhazia. There are also Mingrelians living in various settlements of the Russian Federation and in Europe. Laz people, on the other hand, live collectively in the historical regions of which they are native, in the Lazistan Sanjak, as it was called in the Ottoman period, and within the borders of Rize and Artvin, as it is defined today. Apart from this, the Laz people also live collectively in the 93 War Immigrant Villages in the west of Turkey.
