This book, which relates the memory of societies, the way they remember their own past, and the way they remember their past with identity problems, offers basic explanations to those interested in the subject. Jan Assmann, an internationally renowned Egyptologist, sheds light on the social formations created by humanity with his explanations from the deep past of civilization. In this work, in which he comparatively examines Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamian civilization, Israel and Ancient Greece, the author brings detailed analysis to the basic character of social memory, its different forms and tools. According to Assmann, writing is defined as a tool of remembering and communicating with the past.
