Little Women-Modern Classics 142
Louisa May Alcott's immortal work, Little Women, published in 1868, has undoubtedly fascinated readers of all ages for generations, thanks to its idealization of family life and its embrace of universal themes that remain valid in all ages. Love, solidarity, death, war and peace, and the conflict between one's own ideals and one's responsibility towards one's family and society constitute the main themes of the novel.
The March sisters, consisting of Jo, an aspiring writer who acts like a boy, Meg, who longs for beautiful clothes and wealth, delicate and fragile Beth, and spoiled and romantic Amy, try to survive in New England during the American Civil War. Although the girls, who struggle with poverty while their fathers are at war, are different from each other in personality, their common goal is to become good people under the guidance of religious advice. The novel showed that women could make their own choices about life, rather than adopting the traditional roles imposed on them by the strict gender norms of the period.
