The stories of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and Merlin were told many times throughout the Middle Ages, and many of them were passed from hand to hand in England and France in the form of books with unknown authors. In fact, the adventures of some of the knights in these stories constituted the source texts of German literature. Between 1469 and 1470, an English knight named Sir Thomas Malory, about whose life we know almost nothing, wrote Morte d'Arthur, the first masterpiece of English literature, making use of all these Arthurian stories.
