In Praise of Madness Book Description Desiderius Erasmus (1469-1536): Erasmus, the first editor of the New Testament, one of the leaders of theological literature and one of the most important humanists of the Northern European Renaissance, laid the foundations of historical-critical background research using philological methods. His writings in the field of education contributed to the shift towards the classics from a humanist perspective rather than the old religious curriculum. He encouraged rising demands for reform while criticizing the abuse of the church's power. This attitude found voice in both the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation. He became a target of both parties because of his independent stance, rejecting Luther's doctrine and the powers that the papacy claimed. In Praise of Folly, which he designed while going to England and wrote at Thomas More's house, he criticized the intellectuals of the period, sarcastically criticizing teachers, priests, theologians, philosophers, merchants, lawyers, rulers, saints and everyone who considered themselves intelligent. Köşebaşı Society Köşebaşı Society Book Description Köşebaşı Society (1943) is not only one of the most important classics of a research practice oriented towards urban anthropology, but also one of the most skillful examples of how life and the street can be touched without getting stuck in the dry monotony of academic jargon and even without getting stuck in the scholastic contradictions. Going out to the streets, being there, living there... William Foote Whyte "dives" into his field with this kind of perspective. “Diving” is undoubtedly the most appropriate word here, because the main thing is to go deeper, deeper and deeper. Of course, Whyte often gets disoriented in the Italian slum in Boston where he made this dive, but always at the expense of discovering something even deeper. And he achieves this masterfully; With Whyte's strokes, a very colorful and complex world, the tremendous order underlying what appears to be chaotic, power networks ranging from the smallest gang to the mafia and politics, dependency relations, and an entire social universe come to the surface in full detail. Köşebaşı Society is also a methodological reference in this context. Whyte directly experiences all the advantages of participant observation and, of course, its problematic aspects. In the appendix of his work, he reflects on this experience at length. Through the story of the Köşebaşı Society, he welcomes us into the business and the academic world of that period.
