Letter on the Blind - Letter on the Deaf and Dumb - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics
Denis Diderot (1713-1784): One of the most important writers and thinkers of the Enlightenment period. He became the editor-in-chief of the Encyclopédie, and wrote literary and philosophical works as well as translations to earn a living. In his Letter on the Blind, published in 1749, he discussed the role of the senses in acquiring knowledge. Diderot was arrested for the ideas he put forward about religion in this work and was imprisoned in Vincennes for three months. The Letter Concerning the Deaf and Dumb was published in 1751, in which the author examined the evolution and function of language. Diderot attracted attention not only for his theories but also for his dialectical presentation.
