Dog Heart
In The Dog's Heart, Bulgakov tells the story of the stray dog Sharik. Professor Filipovic, a world-class scientist, carries out surgery on Sharik, whom he takes home and feeds, and replaces his testicles and pituitary gland with those of a common criminal. The dog turns into a cheeky, brazen, lustful and rude person. Even though Sharik, in his human form, turns the professor's life into hell, he will be able to gain a position for himself in the Soviet bureaucracy.
Dog Heart, which satirizes the communists' ideals of creating a new Soviet people above petty bourgeois values, is Bulgakov's most discussed work.
