What is Fundamentalism?
President of the International Marx-Hegel Dialectical Thought Society, Prof. In this book, Domenico Losurdo discusses the historical, sociological and political sources of not only Islamic but also Jewish and Christian fundamentalism. Thus, it reverses reductionist and one-sided interpretations: On the one hand, it critically examines different fundamentalisms that are assumed to be at opposite poles of each other in current political debates, pointing out not only their differences but also their common points. He criticizes the claim of "enlightened Western civilization", which ascribes fundamentalism to Islamic and Eastern societies, with historical and current examples.
In addition, it bases this phenomenon on its historical and sociological foundations, against the claims that offer essentialist and self-styled explanations for the rise of fundamentalist movements, especially in recent decades, and attribute it to "inevitability". He discusses the relationship of fundamentalism as a political movement with different social/political phenomena such as capitalist modernization, independence movements or separatism.
