Red and Black
XIX. The masterpiece of Stendhal, one of the greatest novelists of the century, The Red and the Black tells the rise and fall of a poor, handsome and talented provincial youth in Paris society. Julien Sorel, who is undecided between the army and the church as a means of advancement in society, soon sees that success and power can only be achieved through the hypocrisy and self-interest that surrounds French society. He first seduces Madame de Rênal, a married woman, and then the arrogant aristocrat Mathilde, and gains a respected place in Paris society. However, his boundless ambition will soon lead to his destruction.
Julien Sorel, the hero of Stendhal's The Red and the Black, is full of contradictions and inconsistencies. He became one of the most impressive characters of the 19th century novel. On the other hand, the book describes in a very striking way the corruption in French society after Napoleon.
