However, his boundless ambition will soon lead to his destruction.

Julien Sorel, the hero of Stendhal's The Red and the Black, is full of contradictions and inconsistencies. He became one of the most impressive characters of the 19th century novel. On the other hand, the book describes in a very striking way the corruption in French society after Napoleon.
