Red and Black - World Classics Book Description Henri Beyle Stendhal's novel Red and Black is one of the author's two strongest and most prominent works. The other of these two works is considered to be the Parma Monastery. The work describes the ambitions of Julien Sorel, who was passionate about rising under the current conditions of Restoration France, the crises he experienced, the Catholic Church, libertarians and royalists, blending them with a love story. The "red and black" that gives its name to the work is not just an expression of two colors, but is actually a representation of the two paths that Julien Sorel will choose. For the rise he passionately desires, he will either crown his religious education and choose the church, or follow his admiration for Napoleon and choose the military path, that is, he will choose either black or red.
