Kırık Hayatlar
“Listen to me. There is a force that drives us to our opposite, and we both look like toys in its hands. For a while now, we have been scrutinizing and hurting each other without any reason or basis, and we have been causing pain and poison to others rather than pleasure and happiness. We are like addicts of a harmful drink, on the one hand we are dying, on the other hand we are reaching out to its bottle again.”
Broken Lives, first published in 1901 It was serialized in Servet-i Fünûn magazine, but when the novel was censored, Halit Ziya abandoned the serialization. Cevdet Kudret puts forward this incompleteness as the reason for the closure of the magazine. In 1922, the novel began to be serialized again in Vakit newspaper and was published in book form in 1924. While preparing this edition of Broken Lives for publication, we based it on the edition published in Ikbal Library in 1924.
Usakligil's last years of life. As we learn from his letter to Suut Kemal Yetkin, published on the Fine Arts page of Ulus newspaper on September 5, 1943, the author finds Broken Lives better than all of his other novels: “< Ask-i Memnû is a work that gave me more confidence than Mai and Black, which preceded it; Maybe you won't believe it, when I was revising the novel Broken Lives for the last time to be published with a new text, I found this one better or less bad than the other two.”
We prepared the 1924 edition of the novel by comparing it with the simplified edition of Halit Ziya Usakligil in 1944 in order to make it a more reliable text. On this occasion, we thought it would be useful, especially in academic research, to see what the author did before simplifying. While doing this, we did not make any changes, taking into account the author's preferences.
Broken Lives, which is "his best novel" according to Usakligil himself, is in its original form. meets its readers once again...
