The image on the first page of this book shows methane (CH ₄ ) bubbles formed by the decay of leaves under ice. Methane is the main component of natural gas; It is a fossil fuel burned to produce electrical energy, heat our homes and run vehicles. Energy obtained from methane contributes to improving living standards, but it is a powerful greenhouse gas whose atmospheric concentration plays a key role in climate. Understanding the natural and industrial processing of methane will help to find solutions to clean, abundant and cheap energy, one of the great challenges for humanity.
