Urban Heterotopia
A stimulating work by Stavros Stavrides to rethink the urban experience and struggle that surrounds our daily lives: Urban Heterotopia.
Stavrides, who ranges from current factors in the structuring of the metropolis to cases of exception, from Walter Benjamin's flaneur to various urban metaphors, from the theatricality in relations with the other to the spatial dimensions of Foucault's power analyses, is not satisfied with theoretical studies alone. He also intervenes in current political issues such as the Zapatistas and the December uprising in Athens, in the context of heterotopia experiences in which other spatial possibilities arise in the city. We think that it is important to think about the question posed by Stavrides in the context of the Gezi Park resistance in the afterword he wrote for the Turkish edition of the book, in terms of imagining alternatives to today's stifling capitalist city experience:
"Could the city of thresholds become the spatial equivalent of a liberation project based on negotiations between different but open identities in the process of collectively creating the future?"
