Turkey of Cities: Possibilities - Boundaries and Conflicts Book Description “Within the Turkey of Cities, some cities stand out with the contribution they make to both themselves and their surroundings and serve as a laboratory; Ultimately, working on these cities opens the door to a politically creative process. By trying to make such an evaluation and analysis in this book, we hope that we have created an academic study that can be a reference for future studies and that we have contributed to the continuation of scientific and public discussions.” The Turkey of Cities: Possibilities, Limits and Conflicts, written by Fırat Genç, Çağlar Keyder, E. Fuat Keyman and Ayşe Köse Badur, looks at the 2000s, when Turkey witnessed dramatic changes in every aspect, focusing on cities. It shows the links between the hyper-centralized structure of the political regime in Turkey and neoliberal practices and urban-scale dynamics at a time when cities are gaining importance all over the world as a result of comprehensive transformations in economic, human, technological and administrative fields. Addressing Izmir, Adana-Mersin, Konya and Van one by one, the authors argue that the developments we witness in an environment where the Turkish economy is more deeply integrated into global markets, where the political sphere is rapidly closing and the administrative structure has become unprecedentedly rigid, are changing urban life, economy and politics. In addition to discussing the consequences for cities, they also reveal how powerful cities' relationships with the state have on their fate. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
