The Goat's Song
The Goat's Song, written in 1926-27 and published despite censorship, is the first novel of Konstantin Konstantinovich Vaginov. It is also the first work of the author, who is known especially for the post-symbolist poems he wrote in the 1920s, to be translated into Turkish.
The drama of a group of intellectuals who had to adapt to the reality of the aftermath of the October Revolution, which radically changed the world they were familiar with, and who tried to find a place for themselves in this new and foreign world and could not hold on. The Goat's Song tells the story. Heroes such as Teptyolkin, the unknown poet and the "writer", inspired by those around the philosopher and literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin, try to remember and keep alive the Russian intellectual class that shined in the years before the revolution. Vaginov, on the other hand, travels in space and time, delicately investigating the role of literature and criticism in society, from Petersburg to ancient Rome, from Leningrad to the world of Greek mythologies.
With its non-linear, piecemeal narration, it is a masterfully implemented example of the structural novel and a novel of the 20th century. The Goat's Song, one of the important works of Russian literature, now meets Turkish readers with Kayhan Yükseler's competent translation from the Russian original.
