Cossacks
The Cossacks, one of Tolstoy's semi-autobiographical books, is as much a love story as it is the story of the author's ebb and flow relationship with civilization throughout his life. Cossacks, which Tolstoy started in 1852 but could not be completed for ten years, begins with the young and rich Olenin, tired of Moscow life, enlisting in the Russian army and being sent to a remote village in the Caucasus. Here he is amazed by the brute strength of the Kazakhs and Chechens, and falls in love with a woman named Maryana, who is talking to a Kazakh. This novel, which is a salute to masters such as Pushkin and Rousseau, in which Tolstoy tells the story of his experiences as a twenty-one-year-old young soldier in the Caucasus, combines fascinating nature descriptions with the author's simple but magnificent language. "In Kazakhs, Tolstoy displays his intelligence that creates a shocking effect. After reading Tolstoy, I feel that we need to learn from the deep psychological approach of Russian writers and improve our writing skills in this direction."
