Kaveran Tzayner-Voices from the Countryside
What kind of life Armenians lived in 1915 and before has been a frequent subject of history and research books, especially in recent decades. However, there are almost no studies that convey the lives of the few Armenians who stayed in Anatolian cities during the Republican period. Here, 'Kavaren Tzayner' (Voices from the Countryside) conveys the impressions of Şavarş Balımyan, an Armenian cleric who visited Anatolian cities in the 1960s, about the Armenian communities living there. Balımyan, who observes the daily lives, contributions to urban life, cultures, rituals and traditions of the Armenian communities, whose population has decreased greatly and is confined to a few neighborhoods of the city they live in, tries to record the Armenian cultural assets, most of which are now in ruins, as much as he can.
In these articles, which were serialized in the Armenian daily Jamanak newspaper in 1962-63, Balımyan gives a first-hand and historically valuable testimony about the life of the Armenian communities in Adana, Mersin, Elazığ, Diyarbakır and Mardin. In these articles, which were followed with great interest when they were published under the title 'Here I Go', Balımyan takes his reader on a journey in time and space with him, in a warm and fluent style.
