Katip Bartleby
Herman Melville (1819-1891): He is one of the greatest writers of American literature. He had to work at a young age and spent four years at sea. This experience was reflected in all his works, especially Moby Dick, which is considered his greatest work. Melville, who did not attract much attention during his lifetime despite producing works such as Moby Dick, Bartleby the Scrivener, Benito Cereno, and Billy Budd, which are all classics today, was virtually rediscovered in the first half of the twentieth century. Bartleby the Scrivener, which was first serialized in Putnam's Monthly Magazine in 1853, was published in the story book Piazza Tales in 1856. In this short but striking story, Melville tells the story of a Wall-Street lawyer who is "deeply committed to the belief that the best life is the easiest life" and how his belief and life are shaken from their foundations when he hires Bartleby, who "prefers not to do it." Bartleby, who deeply influenced the twentieth century literature, is one of the iconic characters of world literature and the name of a very clear attitude towards life. Scribe Bartleby is a rejection, a resistance, and finally the immortal symbol of man's will to remain himself.
