Katip Bartleby
When he died as an anonymous writer known to a very limited circle, Melville left behind Moby Dick, which is considered one of the masterpieces of the classical novel today, and his cult short story Bartleby the Scrivener. Young Bartleby, who was a clerk in a lawyer's office on Wall Street in 19th century New York, over time turned into a problem that his boss did not know how to deal with, with his "choosing not to do" and indifference.
Bartleby became one of the iconic characters of 20th century literature, becoming independent from the text he was about and becoming a lively person who began to live his own life, inspiring other literary works. This complex character, the incompatible cog of the wheel, which many thinkers from Deleuze to Derrida, from Blanchot to Negri, have written about, continues to be the subject of new readings and analyses.
“Bartleby is beyond the frivolity of ingenuity or dreamy imagination; "Above all, it is a sad and true book that shows one of the everyday ironies of the universe: the true uselessness."
-Jorge Luis Borges
