Heart of Darkness - Modern Classics 150 Book Description In Heart of Darkness, Conrad describes the experience he had in the Congo in 1890, which shook him deeply. Kurtz, the “hero” of the work, which is today considered a classic of modernism, says “Horror! Horror!" His cry reflects the disappointment and psychological shock experienced by the author, who started his journey with great hopes, in this country. Like all great works of literature, Heart of Darkness has, over time, gone beyond the text its creator intended to write. Although the novella, published in 1899, was a product of the time in which it was written and described the imperialist exploitation of Europeans in Africa, it inspired debates that lasted for generations and continue to the present day. These discussions, which still keep the text alive today, are modernism's discovery of the self, the search for new forms of expression, the legacy of colonialism, the construction of gender, the ecological consequences of imperialism and modernization, etc. it goes around. While often praised for its emphasis on the devastating impact of colonialism on both the exploiter and the exploited, Heart of Darkness, which has also been described as “racist” by some postcolonial African writers, is one of the most discussed modern literary texts. JOSEPH CONRAD (1857-1924) British writer of Polish origin was born in Berdichev, Ukraine. His father Apollo Korzeniowski's translations of English and French literature introduced him to literature at an early age. The revolutionary activities of his father, a Polish nationalist, against Russia caused the family to be exiled to Vologda in the north of the country in 1861. Conrad, who attended a school in Krakow for a while, went to sea on a ship affiliated with the French merchant fleet in 1874. He became a British citizen in 1886. He worked in the British merchant fleet for 16 years and rose to the rank of captain in his maritime career. During his travels, which provided material for his novels, he visited Australia, islands in the Indian Ocean, the South Pacific, South America and the Congo. Lord Jim (1900), Nostromo (1904), The Secret Agent (1907) and Under Western Eyes (1911) are among his most important works. (From the Promotional Bulletin)
