On the Spirit of the Laws
Montesquieu (1689-1755): One of the most important thinkers of the Enlightenment period. Born in La Brède, he studied law. He was a member of the Bordeaux parliament and served as a judge. He was elected to the Bordeaux Academy and published articles. He gained fame with his Persian Letters and devoted his life to his theoretical and literary works. In 1748, he published On the Spirit of Laws, the work of twenty years of work. Following criticism, he wrote a defense of the book in 1750, but the Catholic Church banned the book in 1751. This magnificent work deals with the laws, traditions and procedures of all peoples in the world; It determines the most appropriate form of government and laws for each society and explains the material and moral reasons for this.
