The Spirit of Laws - Tracing Genocide in Abandoned Property Laws
"Take me by the arm, throw me out of my village, then sell my property, this is never permissible. Neither the Ottoman conscience nor the law will accept this."
Ahmet Riza
The great disaster that Ottoman Armenians experienced in 1915 did not only cost people's lives. It left behind many properties that were symbols of their presence in Anatolia and traces of their culture. The debate about what would happen to Armenian property and whether Ottoman citizens subjected to "deportation" would be able to return and retrieve their property continued for many years. Even when the Ottoman Empire collapsed and the Republic of Turkey was established, the "problem" remained hot. The Spirit of Laws discusses the debate on abandoned property transferred from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic in the light of the laws enacted on this subject. It traces the "wisdom" transferred from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic regarding the non-return of abandoned properties.
"... If the question "to whom were the properties left over from the Armenians distributed?", "what happened to whom?", this would create a huge shock. Because a history that had been taught to the country would collapse. If this history was explained incorrectly, then the thought that other things were also explained incorrectly would spread to the society. "There will be an important transformation in Turkey."
