Kalbin Yardımcı Fiilleri
The main theme of Auxiliary Verbs of the Heart is that the narrator-author conveys his mother's death in its most direct, purest form. The subtext consists of the emotional reactions this event caused in the author, unforgettable memories, and literary quotations added to the text in a kind of variation format. The mother, who was admitted to a gloomy hospital due to her serious illness, dies and is buried after a prolonged and painful process. However, after the funeral, the author is resurrected in his inner world and tells about his life as a young girl and woman and the painful, bitter days he spent in the hospital.
Péter Esterházy, one of the undisputed most important and innovative writers of contemporary Hungarian literature, explains the mother-son relationship in this short book. It conveys the dimensions and the mourning process that comes with death with striking sections from daily life in Hungary's recent history. In addition, it brings to its pages the fragility of a body that is slowly collapsing, the absoluteness of death and, at some point, the painful rebellion of the body. However, with the author's courage in conveying the facts in their purest form, his ability to observe, and above all, his sharp sensitivity, Auxiliary Verbs of the Heart paradoxically becomes a text that exceeds realism.
