Cacti Can Live Without Water - Women Talk About Mamak Prison
Mamak... A prison after the September 12 coup... And the women who tried to survive and resist in Mamak during the days that affected every part of Turkey in a very shocking way... Women who showed solidarity with each other while resisting and brought out laughter in every pain...
A story of rebellion. A story lived by laughing, singing, saying no, solidarity with each other, sharing...
When we were in Mamak Military Prison and Detention Center, we were as timid as a pigeon at first... We were frightened, hesitant, afraid, worried and silent. We tried to understand. Then we gathered. We joined forces to defend our humanity, our personality and our revolutionary values. This rebellion started like a stone thrown into water... First a small ring, then like rings that gradually grew, multiplied and spread throughout the water...
As our love grew and our solidarity grew stronger, we witnessed oppression shrinking. Even when we were on death row, in a coffin, or alone in isolation or in cages, the warmth of friendship and comradeship warmed our cold bodies and hearts... And we learned there that what hurt us the most was witnessing the pain of our friends, rather than our own... And together, we became taller. to stop, to walk taller...
As they tried to take our personalities away from us, to extinguish the light in our eyes, to strip us of who we are, together we lit a light, albeit a small one, in the darkness of oppression...
