Creating the Hero
At the beginning of the 20th century, when scenarios for the collapse of the tired empire that had lasted six centuries were being drawn, the Unionists held tightly to the values of the glorious past in order to strengthen the legitimacy of the Constitutional Monarchy. It was calculated that by reminding the glorious heroes of the brilliant victories spanning six centuries, the deteriorating morale of the people would be raised. One of these heroes was Alemdar Mustafa Pasha. Alemdar Mustafa Pasha, one of the interesting and most discussed figures of our history, although he lived for only four months, including 3 months and 19 days as grand vizier in the capital Istanbul, was able to change the course of Ottoman political history, pave the way for innovation movements, initiate the constitutional and democratic process and even It has been in the field of interest of many researchers working in different disciplines such as history, law and political science, with references such as bringing modern concepts such as human rights to the agenda of the Turkish public.
Prof. Dr. Kemalettin Kuzucu, in this work called Creating the Hero, explains in an exquisite style how the Unionists effectively used the phenomenon of 'dissension', which is today expressed as a commemoration ceremony, through Alemdar Mustafa Pasha, to make the masses adopt the Constitutional Monarchy and the management system it envisages. By explaining it, he adds a new one to the rare studies done in the field of historiography in Turkey.
As you read Alemdar Mustafa Pasha's monograph, you will see once again how tradition was invented...
