Clock Without Dial
Set in the 1950s, when the disconnection between the Southern and Northern states continued after the Civil War in the USA, The Clock Without a Dial reflects Carson McCullers' sharp and sad thoughts on race, class and justice. Milan, a small town in the state of Georgia, is a place where many secrets are kept, racial discrimination affects every aspect of life and the concept of justice is questioned. The lives of the town's four residents are inextricably linked: middle-aged pharmacist JT Malone, who faces an illness he never expected, old Fox Clane, a once powerful politician, Jester Clane, his grandson who wants to fly with his own wings, and Sherman Pew, a black man who can't find where he belongs. While these four characters question their past, they also watch a clock without a dial, waiting for what tomorrow will bring them. The story asks over and over again a simple but weighty question: Who are we and where are we going? In this last novel, published in 1961, McCullers tells about prejudices, mysteries and forgiveness through intertwined stories.
