Women and Socialism
Women and Socialism is the masterpiece of August Bebel, one of the founders of the German Social Democratic Party and one of the important figures of the breakthrough of the socialist movement in Europe at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
The work, which stands out as the first comprehensive work on the "women's question" by a writer and politician among the followers of Marx and Engels, has become a classic work that has been translated into many languages and spread around the world. This is the work that Sabiha Sertel, one of the important figures of social thought, intellectual movement and organized struggle in Turkey, read with the suggestion of her teacher while she was studying sociology in the USA and was deeply impressed and translated into Turkish in 1935.
Of course, when viewed from today's perspective, it can be said that some of Bebel's approaches are inadequate to explain today's relations and have been surpassed. However, this does not prevent the text and Sertel's translation from being historical documents.
In addition, Women and Socialism is a valuable work that is much discussed not only within the first part of its title, that is, the "woman" issue, but also within the framework of the "socialism" issue. From the perspective of the “conception of socialism”, it is the first text that tries to create concrete answers after the brief descriptions of Marx and Engels in On the Gotha and Erfurt Programmes.
Bebel: "How will education transform, how will agriculture and industry develop, what will happen in working conditions, how will individuals participate in cultural life?" etc. While she handled dozens of questions in detail, both in the context of "women's issue" and in terms of "society of the future" and created a unique work that continues to this day, Sabiha Sertel also embarked on a work of historical importance by bringing these discussions to Turkey in 1935.
We present this honorable history to our readers again.
