The tenth book of the series consisting of Simenon's novels translated by the masters of Turkish literature is The Fugitive, written by the author under the name L'évadé in 1936 and translated into Turkish by Tahsin Yücel in 1959.
The novel tells the story of German teacher Jean-Paul Guillaume, married and father of two, who lives an ordinary life in La Rochelle, France. Even his wife does not know that this teacher, who has been commuting to work on the same streets for years, is actually an outlaw galley prisoner. One day, the lives of Guillaume and those around him suddenly change: great coincidences will bring our hero face to face with his past and cause him to reckon with himself.
Tahsin Yücel, who also translated Katil , which appeared in the Masters' Turkish TV series, into Turkish, expressed his admiration for the author by saying, "Simenon does not need long analyses, long and convoluted sentences; On the contrary, he says what he wants to say in short sentences, as if he is afraid of boring the reader or as if he is in a hurry. But, almost every sentence confronts us with a detail that is as striking as it is small.” The closeness of the fugitive master of letters to himself also reflects this approach.
