The second book of the Bilge Karasu Literary Studies Series. This work, which Jale Özata Dirlikyapan compiled into a book from her doctoral thesis, focuses on the works of a group of innovative writers called "1950s generation storytellers" (Ferit Edgü, Orhan Duru, Leylâ Erbil, Bilge Karasu, Feyyaz Kayacan, Onat Kutlar, Demir Özlü, Adnan Özyalçiner).

These names, who wrote and published between 1950 and 1960, gave the first examples of modernist literature in Turkish with their questioning and innovative views. Özata conducts his analysis against the background of the cultural and literary environment of Turkey, which was experiencing a major political-social transformation at that time. The author, who traces surrealism and existentialism in the different content elements of the stories, focuses on themes such as meaninglessness, nothingness, anxiety, malevolence, crime and suicide. It reveals that the formal innovations brought by the texts become evident in sentence structures and fictions. The Story That Broke Its Shell, in a sense, witnesses the transformation of "story" into "story".
