Armenians of Izmir
Compiled by: Zakarya Mildanoğlu
Did the Armenians of Izmir really live? Did they exist, breathe, walk, talk, be born and die on these shores of the Aegean that resemble a paradise on earth? If we look at the almost non-existent traces left from centuries of life in and around Izmir, one of Turkey's largest and most special cities, we can answer these questions: "Yes, they lived, they existed!" It is not at all easy to answer. The situation is the same if we look at the Izmir chronicles written in Turkey, except for a handful of well-intentioned researchers. According to many Turkish sources, they played no role in the history of their city other than being responsible for the 1922 Izmir Fire. They were gone, then one day they set their neighborhoods on fire and got on ships and left! The book Armenians of Izmir brings together articles that look at the history of this beautiful city and some of the settlements around it, especially from the perspective of how Armenians lived there, using mostly Armenian sources. Place of Armenians in the city; institutions such as churches, schools, hospitals, printing houses and press; By looking at their architecture, art, place in trade, relations with neighboring communities and even their clothing styles, with the help of numerous photographs, we aim to make it easier for us to imagine what it is like to carry the identity of Izmir, thus to make it easier for us to imagine what it is like to carry the Izmir identity, so that the city's citizens, especially the people who are the subject of this book, live in today's Izmir. It aims to familiarize those who are interested in history with some basic sources and discussions. Cities, by nature, are places that bring together people who are both similar and dissimilar, but who share common living spaces and a common culture. We may have missed opportunities to live together in the past, but this never prevents us from looking at the past and drawing some conclusions. Izmir Armenians are an extremely valuable resource in this respect. To better understand Izmir's past and present...
