Unoptimistic Hope
As if seeing the proverbial glass half empty wasn't enough, as someone who is almost certain that the other half is full of something that tastes awful, I'm probably not the right person to write about hope. On the one hand, there are those whose philosophy of life can be summarized with the sentence "eat, drink, have fun, we will die tomorrow anyway", and on the other hand, there are those who say "we will die tomorrow", to whom I feel much closer. One reason why I chose to write on this subject, despite these tendencies that lead people to trouble, is that hope is a curiously neglected concept in an age where, in Raymond Williams' words, "the loss of the future is felt."
-Terry Eagleton-
In this book, Marxist literary critic Terry Eagleton examines "hope", one of the most sensitive human emotions. By making clear distinctions between false hopes and full hopes, Eagleton problematizes this "neglected" feeling on a wide scale, ranging from literary works to philosophical texts. Based on this effort, Eagleton offers brilliant comments that are thought-provoking as well as provocative for the people of "now" who are struggling between the stifling relationships of daily life and the impermeable codes of economic processes. A unique guidebook for those who still have hope and those who have given up hope completely...
